Description: Selling alcohol, tobacco, and vapor products is a serious responsibility. Today, determining someone's age simply by their appearance has become challenging, and fake IDs are becoming harder to distinguish from authentic ones. While minors will always attempt to buy these products, this subject can help make sure your employees don't accidentally sell these products to under-aged customers.

Checking Customer Identification

  • Selling alcohol, tobacco, and vapor products to minors is against the law. In this topic, learners are taught when they should ask for identification (ID), and how they should examine and inspect ID to verify that it hasn’t been tampered with or altered. Learners are also taught what to do when they are unsure if an ID is fake, or if it doesn’t belong to the customer standing in front of them. This topic includes a video to cover its main concepts.

    1. Be diligent in checking the identification of anyone who looks like they could be under the age of 30, so you don’t risk selling alcohol or tobacco products to a minor.

    2. When checking a piece of identification, ask the customer to remove it from their wallet or carrying case, so you can physically handle it. This allows you to inspect it for any tampering.

    3. Once holding the identification, take time to physically examine it, and look for signs of tampering. Feel around the photo, birth date, and the edges of the card for any rough edges and irregular plastic coating or lamination.

    4. To check for any alterations to the printed information on the identification, confirm that there is no blurred or smudged text, especially the birth date. Make sure that all the letters and numbers are the same print type.

    5. Examine any built-in security features of the identification, like microprint or holograms. Not all holograms are easily visible, you might have to tilt the card to see them. Any uneven and broken lines or misspelled words could indicate that the identification is fake.

    6. Look at the birth date on the identification and verify that the customer is of legal age to make their purchase. Memorize the birth year required for someone to be of legal age to purchase alcohol or tobacco products in your region.

    7. Inspect the photograph on the identification, and make sure that it matches the person who gave it to you. If you aren’t sure that the person in the photo is the person in front of you, ask a co-worker to help you.

    8. To confirm that the identification belongs to the person standing in front of you, hold their card, and ask the customer to verify the personal details on their identification card, like their exact birthdate, the spelling of their middle name, or their full address. If they hesitate, can’t remember, or give you incorrect information, the ID could be fake or not their own.

    9. If you require further validation to confirm that the identification belongs to the person in front of you, ask them to sign their name on a piece of paper and compare it to the signature on the card.

    10. It is against the law to sell to minors. If you are unsure that your customer is legally allowed to make their purchase or believe that their identification is fake, refuse to sell it to them.
