Tips for Managing Crowds in a Retail Environment

  • Holidays and special sales events can draw large crowds to your store. The store can get very busy, very quickly. There are certain things you can do to help manage the crowds and customers, whether you’re monitoring the entrance or working on the sales floor. 1. If you’re assigned to help manage the line outside your store during an event with large crowds, make sure to regularly communicate with the customers in line. Provide updates and direct them where to go to help keep the line organized and reduce the chance of customers getting upset and/or pushing or rushing the line.

    2. During an event with large crowds, if you’re assigned to monitor the entrance, make sure you’re not letting in people over your store’s capacity. If capacity is reached, do not let additional customers in until the occupancy level decreases.

    3. If you’re assigned to monitor the entrance and exit during an event with large crowds, check that nothing is blocking the entrances and exits to the store. This could pose a serious safety risk so it’s important to keep this area clear.

    4. Use the designated staff entrance if your store is hosting an event with a large crowd. Make sure to close the door properly so customers don’t attempt to use that entrance to gain access to the store.

    5. Speak calmly and confidently with customers during an event with a large crowd at your store. If you sound upset or worried, it may affect the customers and cause uneasiness.

    6. During an event with a large crowd at your store, complete the duties in the area you’re your manager assigned to you. You should only change locations if instructed to do so by your manager. It’s important that all areas of the store are properly monitored and that your work is completed to help make sure the event goes well.

    7. During an event with a large crowd at your store, communicate with your co-workers using the method your store manager indicated. This will help make sure that you can get a response or respond to others quickly.

    8. If you have an issue during an event with a large crowd at your store, contact the people or person assigned to handle that specific issue. This will help make sure that issues get solved promptly and that efforts aren’t duplicated.

    9. If your store is having an event with a large crowd, review and follow your store’s policies and protocols for preventing theft. People may try to take advantage of the crowd to steal, so it’s important that you know what to do.

    10. If your store is having an event with a large crowd, review and follow your store’s emergency plans. It’s important that you know exactly what to do if something goes wrong; acting quickly can help prevent emergencies from escalating.
