How to Have Safe Interactions with Customers During Deliveries

  • Minimizing the risk of infection is on everybody’s mind, and there are things you can do as a delivery driver to help make your interactions with customers safe for both of you. In this topic, you’ll learn what you can do to help minimize the risk of infection, like how to carry out a ‘contactless delivery’, what to do if the customer would like to pay with cash, and why you should ask the customer for their preference in how they collect the order, accept change, or take a receipt.

    1. Delivery personnel must always carry hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes for their delivery bags. This helps minimize the risk of infection.

    2. Delivery personnel must wear a face mask when interacting with customers to help minimize the risk of infection.

    3. If a customer has chosen to have a ‘contactless delivery’, leave the package at their doorstep. Avoid ringing the doorbell; call them on their registered mobile number to inform them of the delivery.

    4. As recommended, keep a 6-foot distance from the customer where possible to avoid the risk of infection.

    5. If a customer wants to pay with cash for the delivery, either collect it directly from the customer’s hand or ask them to place the money in your delivery bag.

    6. If physical contact with the customer occurs, it is critical that you sanitize your hands immediately after completing the transaction with the customer.

    7. Use a sanitizing wipe on your delivery bag if the customer placed money in it and/or touched it, so it is clean for your next delivery.

    8. Encourage customers to consider contactless transactions by asking them if they would like to pay using Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or another contactless bank card option, like tapping their card.

    9. As customers are experiencing a range of emotions, try to read their body language or ask their preference in how they collect the package, accept change, or take a receipt.

    10. If a customer wants to give you a tip, make sure you sanitize your hands after the transaction or, alternatively, request the customer leave the tip in your delivery bag.

    11. If you touched any common surfaces, like doorbells/intercom buttons, door handles, or elevator buttons, you should sanitize your hands to help minimize the risk of infection.
