Food Label Terms

  • As grocery products become more inclusive of various diets, there are more terms and labels that appear on them to help consumers make the right choices for their individual needs. Customers may have questions about the differences between specific labels, and this topic will help you understand these terms, so you can accurately answer questions. This topic will teach you about ‘lactose-free’, ‘dairy-free’, ‘gluten-free’, ‘vegan’, ‘vegetarian’, ‘tree nut-free’, and ‘peanut-free’.

    1. Always encourage customers to read the labels and warnings on products if they have any allergies or dietary restrictions, so they are sure the product is right for them.

    2. Lactose is a type of sugar found in cow, goat, and sheep milk. ‘Lactose-free’ means that the lactose has been removed from the milk in the product; it does not mean that the product is ‘dairy free’.

    3. ‘Dairy-free’ means that the product wasn’t made with any milk or milk by-products. ‘Dairy-free’ products are lactose-free since the dairy is completely replaced, often with plant-based ingredients.

    4. ‘Gluten-free’ means that the product doesn’t have any ingredients that contain gluten, which is a wheat protein. This also means the product doesn’t have any wheat, barley, or rye, and that there was no cross-contamination with gluten in shared storage or manufacturing equipment.

    5. ‘Vegan’ means that there are no animal products or by-products in the product.

    6. ‘Vegetarian’ means that the product contains no meat products, including beef, chicken, pork, and seafood.

    7. Tree nuts grow on trees and include almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, walnuts, pistachios, and more. ‘Tree nut-free’ means the product has none of these nuts.

    8. Peanuts are classified as legumes and grow underground. Look specifically for a ‘peanut-free’ label to ensure there are no peanuts, peanut butter, or peanut oil in the product.
