The Toothpick Method for Cake Writing

  • There are various ways that you can practice and get better at writing on cakes. This topic will cover what’s known as the toothpick method. This will be a step-by-step process using parchment paper and a toothpick to help create clear writing with fewer mistakes.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. Step one: Cut a piece of parchment paper to the same size as your cake. This is the base of your stencil so you can plan your design.

    2. Step two: Write your message on the parchment paper in marker. This helps you plan where to place the letters on the cake.

    3. Step three: Place the parchment paper lightly on the cake and use a toothpick to poke or trace where you’ve written your message. This will create a template for you to follow on the cake.

    4. Step four: Carefully take the parchment paper off of the cake and practice writing on the paper with the icing. This will help you understand how the icing will flow before you do it on the cake.

    5. Step five: Trace the guide you’ve created on the cake with your icing. The template should help reduce the number of mistakes.

Best Practices for Cake Writing

  • There are several best practices for writing on a cake to ensure it comes out clean and clear. This topic will go over some tips that include how to prepare your cake before writing on it, how to hold and position the icing bag, and how to make writing an easier process.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

    1. When piping lettering on a cake, gently touch the tip of the piping bag to the cake and lift straight up for a clean line. This will make the writing come out cleaner.

    2. Chill frosted buttercream cakes until they’re firm (15 minutes in the freezer or 30 minutes in the fridge) before attempting to write on them. This will allow you to remove any mistakes easily without messing up the top layer of frosting.

    3. Use cursive letters instead of block letters for cakes when possible. Cursive letters are easier to pipe because you can better control the flow of the icing.

    4. Add any writing to the cake before you add decorations to make sure you have room for the message. It’s easier to add embellishments later than it is to remove them.

    5. 5. Keep your icing bag at a 45-degree angle while creating letters. This helps prevent you from dragging the tip through the icing which can alter the letters.

    6. Don’t load the icing bag with too much icing as this will make it harder for you to handle and control. Fill it to a comfortable weight.

    7. Use a number two round icing tip when writing on a cake. Anything smaller will be too hard to squeeze stiff icing through and anything larger will make the writing hard to read.

    8. Use your dominant hand to hold your icing bag and use your other hand to help stabilize and guide you, otherwise you might shake, and the writing can be compromised.
