Description: While it's easy to believe that one vote won't make a difference in the overall result of an election, that belief can have important consequences when it's shared by the public. Each vote matters and is the result of a human right to have everybody's voices heard. In this subject, learners will be taught about the importance of voting during election times, how they can use their vote to affect change, and why they should always exercise their right to vote.

Why Should I Vote?

  • Awaiting the results of an important election can be nerve-wracking and unsettling, but if you exercise your right to vote, you can take comfort in the fact that you did your part. In this topic, you’ll learn about the importance of casting your vote, how it can help your opinion be heard, and why not voting can have greater consequences than voting can.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. Voting is one of the most impactful things you can do to affect change for yourself, in your community, and across your country, because it allows your opinion to help shape the future.

    2. Non-voters can have a major negative affect on the results of an election. If these people decided to vote, the results could be very different.

    3. Voting is your chance to show politicians what you want them to change. Research which issues each candidate stands for, and vote for the person or party that represents what you want to see done in your community.

    4. Voting is your human right, privilege, and obligation, which wasn’t always true for some people. Casting your vote justifies those people’s fight for the right to vote.

    5. If you don’t agree with any of the politicians or their parties, you should spoil your ballot by leaving it blank. This still counts as casting a vote, and the parties will be likely to change their policies to appeal more to you.

    6. If you are not legal voting age yet, or are unable to vote for other reasons, still involve yourself in the election process by getting informed. Do this by talking to people who can vote, researching the political parties, and volunteering in your community.

    7. Plan for the voting process ahead of time so you’re prepared when polls open. Speak to your manager about needing time to go vote, and research the rules in your region so you know when, where, and how to vote.
