  • Work environments have a variety of people interacting with surfaces and germs naturally spread. It’s important to properly clean surfaces to prevent diseases or illnesses from spreading. In this topic, learners are taught strategies and techniques for properly disinfecting/sanitizing high-touch surfaces, the importance of cleaning before disinfecting, and steps to take when cleaning electronic devices. Please speak with your manager for specific details about which products your business uses, and which surfaces need to be cleaned regularly in your work area.

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. Clean your area to remove micro-organisms, dust, dirt, soil, and to reduce the growth of germs.

    2. Disinfect or sanitize surfaces after cleaning them to kill or reduce germs to safe levels.

    3. Cleaning should always be done before sanitizing/disinfecting because if dirt and debris are on the surface, disinfecting won’t work properly.

    4. High-touch surfaces are areas that are frequently touched throughout the day by many people. This includes doors, light switches, computer keyboards, counter tops, etc.

    5. Clean high-touch surfaces often to prevent the spread of germs; it’s the best defense against illness.

    6. Low-touch surfaces are touched less frequently. This includes walls, floors, and windowsills. They require regular cleaning but not daily, unless visibly soiled.

    7. Leave sanitizers and disinfectants on the surface for the specified time on the label so that they can work properly. Always let them air dry; never wipe them down.

    8. Make sure the surface is clean and dry prior to applying the disinfectant so that the cleaner and disinfectant never mix, rendering them ineffective.

    9. The first step of cleaning is to make sure all visible soil is removed. This includes bodily fluids and organic matter.

    10. If you use a handheld electronic device, clean its case separately (if applicable), and avoid the ports on the device, so it does not become damaged.
