Types of Necklines

  • Depending on what you’re wearing, the neckline of your shirt can play a big role in how you style your whole outfit. In this topic, you’ll learn how to identify different necklines, like crew necks, boat necks, halters, scoop, and more.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. A crew neckline has a round circular neckline that fits snugly around the base of the neck. It is also called a round neck.

    2. A boat neckline has a wider rounded neckline that rests just below the collarbone. It extends further towards the shoulders.

    3. A button-up, polo, or collared shirt has a collar and buttons along the front of the shirt. When buttoned up, it fits similar to a round crew neckline, meaning it rests around the base of the neck. When unbuttoned, it’s similar to a v-neck neckline, as it forms a point in the center of the chest.

    4. A halter neckline has straps that wrap around the base of the neck. This neckline exposes the shoulders.

    5. A scoop neckline is round but deeper and wider than a crew neck. This neckline comes down and sits a few inches below the collar bone.

    6. V-necklines are shaped like the letter V and form a point in the center of the chest. These necklines come in various depths.

    7. An off-the-shoulder or Bardot neckline goes straight across the bust and around the sides of the shoulders, exposing the collarbone and tops of the shoulders.

    8. A turtleneck comes up high to the neck, and is usually tight-fitting, and includes fabric that can be folded over at the top.

Recommending Necklines Based on Body Features

  • In this topic, you’ll learn which necklines to recommend to your customers based on their body type or features. While some necklines, like a crew neck or v-neck, look good on all body types, other necklines can draw attention to or accentuate certain features. You’ll learn which necklines can elongate someone’s silhouette, balance out fuller midsections, and how certain styles draw the eyes to certain parts, like the collarbones and shoulders.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

    1. Recommend crew necklines, button-ups, polos, and collared shirts to anyone because they complement all body types.

    2. Recommend a boat neckline to balance out fuller mid-sections since it draws the eye out to the shoulders.

    3. Boat necklines also work well for those with slender shoulders since it makes the shoulders look wider and the neck shorter.

    4. Recommend halter necklines to those with wider shoulders, toned arms, or larger busts as it will help create a balanced look.

    5. Scoop necklines can be recommended to anyone since they look good on most body types. This style draws the eye downward, which lengthens the neck, accentuating the collarbone and shoulders.

    6. Recommend V-necklines to any body type. A deeper V will look good on those with wider shoulders and thicker torsos since it helps to balance their silhouette. V-necklines can also make the neck and face appear slimmer.

    7. Recommend off-the-shoulder necklines to those who want to show off their collarbones. This neckline also helps to balance fuller mid-sections since it draws the eyes to the shoulders. This style may not be flattering on people who have broad shoulders, since it can make them look wider.

    8. Recommend turtlenecks or high necks to people with longer necks or longer faces since this neckline frames the face and hides the length of the neck. Make sure that there are a few inches/centimeters between the chin and the top of the shirt to prevent the head from looking like it’s floating or detached from the rest of the body.

Recommending Necklaces

  • Necklaces provide a great opportunity for cross-selling in your store. It’s important to understand which necklaces go with certain necklines since these types of accessories can add elegance to an outfit, create a statement, or emphasize certain body parts. In this topic, you’ll learn what types of necklaces to suggest, and what types should be avoided with certain necklines.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    1. Necklaces provide a great opportunity for cross-selling in your store. Once the customer has decided on a shirt to purchase, you can suggest they buy a complementary necklace.

    2. Necklaces should be slightly longer than the crew neck or rest just above it. Avoid chokers. You can recommend bib and collar necklaces for this neckline.

    3. Boat necklines can be paired with long, layered necklaces or pendants to create an interesting look. Avoid shorter necklaces since they can fall under the shirt and be hidden.

    4. Button-up and collared necklines can be paired with delicate layered necklaces if the shirt will be worn unbuttoned. If the shirt will be buttoned up or is a looser fit, recommend larger statement necklaces.

    5. Scoop necklines leave a lot of room for necklaces, so there are many options. Layered necklaces and larger pendants will help fill in space. Long necklaces will help create length in the body; avoid very short necklaces, like chokers.

    6. V-necklines can be paired with necklaces that match the V-shape of the shirt. The necklace should fall about an inch above the neckline. Too short of a necklace leaves too much space, and if it’s too long, it will disappear under the shirt.

    7. Off-the-shoulder necklines pair well with chokers to draw attention to the face and accentuate the shoulders even more. Since there is a lot of bare skin, thicker, shorter necklaces are recommended because they won’t overwhelm the style.

    8. Turtlenecks or high neck shirts pair well with longer chain style necklaces. Long necklaces draw the eye down and make the body look longer.
