Description: Even if driving is something your employees do daily, it is still one of the most dangerous things they may do on the job. Making sure your employees do visual inspections of their vehicle before driving could prevent an accident caused by faulty lights, tires with low pressure, and various other potential hazards. This subject will teach learners what a vehicle inspection involves and why each area of the vehicle needs to be checked every time before they drive. Note: This content is written for those who drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Inspecting the Interior and Exterior of Your Vehicle - Right-Side Drivers

  • Vehicle inspections are an important part of defensive driving since they help ensure your vehicle is safe before you drive it. This topic will explore the exterior and interior parts of the vehicle that you need to inspect for hazards before driving, including what to look for on the windows, what you should check for underneath the vehicle, and what warning signs could be on your dashboard.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. A vehicle inspection, also called a circle check, should be done each time before you drive. It involves looking around and inside your vehicle for various hazards and warning signs.

    2. Look underneath your vehicle and check for hazards such as animals, children, or items underneath that you could run over or cause damage to the vehicle.

    3. Look underneath and around your vehicle for any fluid leaks. Certain leaks could cause the vehicle’s steering, brakes, or radiator to fail if they go unnoticed.

    4. Inspect each of your vehicle’s tires to make sure they’re properly inflated and there’s no obvious damage that could cause the tires to blow out while driving.

    5. Check that all of your vehicle’s lights work properly, including directional signals, hi-beams, taillights, and even the interior lights, so that your vision is maximized and other drivers are aware of what you are doing while driving.

    6. Check that your windshield, side, rear windows, and mirrors are clean, and free of chips and cracks. If your vision is impaired, it could cause an accident while driving.

    7. Test your windshield wipers before you start driving to make sure they’re functioning properly and that there’s enough windshield washer fluid, as these are essential in keeping your visibility clear in certain driving situations.

    8. Start your vehicle and check that there are no warning lights lit up on the dash and that the gauges, like the engine temperature, look normal. These warnings can indicate a serious problem with the vehicle.

    9. Test that the air conditioning, heating, and vents are all in working order so that you can properly set the temperature in your vehicle and prevent fogging and frosting.

    10. Check your vehicle’s brakes as you start to move your vehicle to make sure they are working properly. If you need to apply more pressure to fully stop the vehicle, the brakes may be damaged.
