Description: In this subject, the word highway is used to refer to any road that has multiple lanes where the speed limit is over 55 miles per hour or 80 kilometers per hour. This includes freeways, expressways, and more. Vehicles are moving at fast speeds and constantly changing lanes on the highway, which can easily lead to accidents if drivers don't take proper precautions. This subject will give an overview of how to stay safe during everyday driving scenarios on highways, including merging, long distance driving, and the proper use of each lane. Note: This content is written for those who drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Entering and Exiting a Highway - Right-Side Drivers

  • For many drivers, the most intimidating part of highway driving is getting to and from the necessary lane. Merging with traffic and moving to your lane presents a lot of potential hazards, so this topic will go over the proper ways to enter and exit highways, safely changing lanes, the importance of maintaining a constant speed, and the dangers of speed adaptation.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. Check your mirrors and the lane ahead for other vehicles as you enter the acceleration lane (entrance ramp) of a highway to make sure you are not interfering with traffic.

    2. When you’ve increased your speed to match the speed of the vehicles already on the highway and you’re ready to merge, use your signal light to indicate that you’re going to move from the acceleration lane to the highway.

    3. The purpose of an acceleration lane is to give you time to reach the appropriate highway speed so that you don’t cause a disruption when you enter.

    4. Move over one lane to the left on the highway when you see a vehicle merging from the acceleration lane, if it’s safe, to give them more room to merge.

    5. When you are ready to move to the deceleration lane to exit the highway, use your signal light to alert others, but don't slow down until your vehicle has completely changed lanes.

    6. Follow the speed limit that’s posted in the deceleration lane, as you may not sense how fast you are going after the higher speeds of the highway.

    7. Speed adaptation is a danger in highway driving where you temporarily lose the ability to judge your speed after the constant high speeds of the highway.

    8. Be prepared to stop at the end of the deceleration lane, or exit ramp, as they often end with a stop sign, lighted intersection, or yield sign.

    9. If you miss your exit, do not stop or reverse on the highway. Instead, take the next exit and use an alternate route.

General Highway Safety Tips - Right-Side Drivers

  • Driving on the highway can be overwhelming because there are so many things to watch for. In this topic, you’ll learn the best ways to navigate the highway and how to deal with fatigue and large vehicles.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. Look ahead to where you’ll be in the next 15-20 seconds when driving on a highway so you can anticipate what will happen next and avoid accidents.

    2. Drive in the right lanes as much as possible on highways as the left lanes are used for passing slower moving traffic.

    3. On highways, give large vehicles a lot of room on every side, and avoid driving right beside them as they often have poor visibility near their vehicle and may not be able to see you.

    4. Leave at least three seconds of space between you and the vehicle in front of you in case they stop suddenly.

    5. Some highways may have a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane. These are meant for vehicles with more than one person, and the lanes are marked with a diamond.

    6. If you know you will be driving for long distances on the highway, pick a location in advance where you can safely stop and rest. Fatigue is a leading cause of highway accidents.

    7. Match the minimum speed of other highway drivers because other drivers may not have time to stop or avoid you if you drive significantly slower.

    8. If you need to pull over on the highway, look for a wide shoulder, and move over to the right as far as possible to avoid becoming a hazard for other drivers.
