What to Do When the Power Goes Out - Grocery

  • You must be prepared if your store experiences a power outage. This includes knowing what to do and what not to do, like locking your store’s doors and not plugging in any portable generators. If you react appropriately during a power outage, your store and its merchandise will experience less loss and damage.

    1. During a power outage in your store, turn off all non-essential tools and appliances that are currently plugged into a power source. This helps reduce the chance of a dangerous power surge when the power is restored.

    2. Never use a portable generator indoors, no matter the circumstance. Portable generators release carbon monoxide which can be life-threatening if it’s inhaled.

    3. If your store has elevators, do not use them during a power outage. They may still work at first but can shut down and you could be trapped inside. Always use the stairs if possible.

    4. During a power outage, don’t open any freezer or refrigerator doors so that the items inside stay cold and frozen for as long as possible. Food can stay cold for hours without power as long as the storage door isn’t opened.

    5. When the power goes out in your store, log the current time and temperatures of the refrigerators so you can monitor how long their contents have gone without power. If the outage lasts four hours, check the temperatures again.

    6. If refrigerated food was left above 25°F or -4°C for over two hours, discard it. If you’re not sure how long the food was left, it’s always safer to discard it in case it spoiled during the outage.

    7. When power is restored, turn on your store’s lights first, then turn on major equipment and appliances. This allows you to test the power before overloading your store’s circuit.

Protecting Against Theft During a Power Outage - Grocery

  • When your store loses power, there are many different hazards to be aware of. One of them is theft, since it can be easier for customers to steal items from the store undetected. In this topic, you’ll learn what you can do to help guard against theft during a power outage, including locking the store’s doors, taking customer information, and staying calm.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. When your store loses power, stay calm. If customers see employees unorganized and panicking during a power outage, they might be more likely to commit theft during it.

    2. Use flashlights, not candles, to carefully walk through your store’s aisles and gather customers and co-workers. Accompany them to the front of the store and use it as a central meeting location.

    3. Theft becomes more likely when a store loses power, so walk through the aisles with some co-workers, and have others standing at the store’s exits to prevent customers from leaving unnoticed.

    4. If you’re working at the cash register when your store’s power goes out, complete any transactions you’ve started. Take note of what the other customers in line were going to buy and gather their contact information.

    5. As soon as the power goes out, lock the store’s front door, and put a sign on it explaining that the store doesn’t have power. This helps prevent theft and communicates to customers why the store is closed.
