    • Video module

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. Driving when you are very emotional is considered distracted driving, so always wait until you are calm to start driving.

    2. If you are experiencing strong emotions before you start to drive, do something that calms you down like taking a walk or talking to a friend.

    3. Practice deep breathing when experiencing strong emotions, as it helps calm your nerves and body.

    4. If you're driving and feeling emotional and can't calm down, safely pull off the road until you are more relaxed.

    5. If you become emotional while driving, you can choose to listen to something calming, like an audiobook or relaxing music, not something that will increase the emotion you are feeling, such as angry, loud music.

    6. Stay focused on your driving and the road ahead of you because this will help distract you from your strong emotions.

    7. Plan your trip and route ahead of time, and leave early, so you don’t feel rushed or pressured, as these emotions can lead to dangerous driving.

    8. Acknowledge that other drivers may make mistakes on the road, and that the mistakes are not directed at you, so you can stay calm and avoid becoming emotional.

    9. If another driver acts aggressively toward you, do not engage with them. Be calm and courteous. Getting upset will increase the risk of an accident.

    10. Make sure you are comfortable in your vehicle, including the temperature, as feeling very cold or hot may worsen strong emotions.
