Description: An overwhelming number of large vehicle collisions occur when at least one of the vehicles is moving in reverse. While the safest way to reverse a large vehicle is to simply avoid doing it, that's not always possible. In this subject, learners will be taught how to safely reverse their vehicle if necessary. This includes what to look for around their large vehicle before they get in it, how and where to park their vehicle to avoid collisions, and general best practices for reversing safely. Note: This content is written for those who drive on the left-hand side of the road.

How to Reverse a Large Vehicle - Left-Side Drivers

  • Every time you reverse your vehicle the situation will be different, even if you drive the same route each day. This is why it’s important for you to know how to safely reverse your large vehicle. In this topic, you’ll learn about what to look for before getting in your vehicle as well as the best practices for reversing it to help you avoid collisions.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module

  • This topic is currently available in English.

    1. Clean and properly adjust your vehicle’s side and rear-view mirrors to maximize visibility around your vehicle before you drive.

    2. Before you get into your vehicle, walk around it and check for possible hazards, like poles or other cars. This helps give you an understanding of the area around your vehicle you’ll be reversing in.

    3. Practice reversing your vehicle in safe areas away from possible hazards before you have to do it. This will help you feel more comfortable reversing it and give you a better understanding of its blind spots.

    4. While you’re parking your vehicle, look for a parking spot or area that you won’t have to reverse to get out of. Using pull-through spots or open curbsides will allow you to reduce the chance of collisions.

    5. If you have to park in an area in which your visibility is limited, you should reverse into the spot instead of reversing out of it later. Reversing into a spot allows you to have more visibility, making it generally easier to do than reversing out.

    6. Try to reverse as quickly as possible without rushing. The more time you spend reversing, the more likely it is you’ll be in a collision.

    7. While you’re reversing your vehicle, look in all of your mirrors and check your blind spots. Sometimes hazards can be hidden so it’s important that you stay aware of everything around you while you’re reversing your vehicle.

    8. Stop reversing immediately if a pedestrian or another vehicle comes into your vehicle’s path and let them pass. Vehicles in reverse don’t have the right-of-way. Do not assume that the person or other vehicle will stop while you continue to reverse.

    9. If your view becomes blocked while you’re reversing your vehicle, stop reversing and get out of the vehicle to double check your surroundings. This will help you regain an understanding of what’s around you so you can reverse safely.
