Description: Most customers have a rough estimate of their shoe size, but that doesn't mean they've selected the right size of a particular shoe. In fact, they may have spent years buying shoes that don't actually fit them properly. Being able to quickly and accurately measure their feet will help you find them a shoe that fits and won't cause long-term discomfort. To do this, employees will need to know how to use a Brannock device, which is specifically designed for measuring a person's foot size accurately across any brand or style of shoe. In this subject, we'll cover what a Brannock device is and how to use it to measure a customer's heel-toe length, arch length, and width. It will also teach you how to use those numbers to suggest the size and fit of a shoe that will be the most comfortable for the customer.

What a Brannock Device Is and How It Works

  • A Brannock device is an essential tool for helping you measure your customer’s feet accurately, so you can recommend the right size and type of footwear for them. In this topic, we’ll cover what a Brannock device is and how each basic part works, so you can use it to measure your customer’s feet correctly.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    • Video module (This module was created in a tool that is not supported by our Content Studio offering.)

    1. A Brannock device is a tool used to accurately determine a customer’s foot size. It measures the heel-toe length, arch length, and the width of a customer’s foot, so you can choose the right shoe size for them.

    2. To choose the appropriate shoe size for a customer using a Brannock device, you compare the arch length, the heel-toe length, and the width measurements. Always use the larger of the two measurements between the arch and heel-toe lengths.

    3. Use the Brannock device’s ‘heel cups’ to hold the customer’s foot (either left or right) in the correct position. The right and left ‘heel cups’ are labeled on the device. Using the correct ‘heel cup’ will help you get an accurate measurement on the ‘base plate’.

    4. The ‘base plate’ is what the customer stands on to have their foot measured. The length lines along the plate indicate the heel-toe length of the customer’s foot when it is placed in the correct ‘heel cup’.

    5. The ‘arch pointer’ is a pointer bar that slides along the inside of the customer’s foot. It’s used to measure arch length.

    6. The ‘width bar’ is a flat plate that sits on the outside of the customer’s foot. It tells you how wide the customer’s foot is relative to their heel-toe length or arch length.

    7. The ‘width bar’ indicates how wide a customer’s foot is in comparison to their heel-toe length or arch length, so you know if you need to suggest a wide version of a shoe or a shoe that is a half-size larger.

Sizing Feet for the Right Shoe Size

  • Taking accurate measurements of a customer’s feet with a Brannock device is important if you’re going to suggest the appropriate size and type of footwear to a customer. In this topic, you’ll learn how to use this device to get the correct measurements of a customer’s foot, as well as how to use that information to determine the shoe size that matches the customer’s measurements. This way, customers are less likely to return the footwear they purchased and more likely to express a positive view of your store.

    • Questions (level 1, 2, 3)

    1. To use a Brannock device, first place it flat on the floor. Set the ‘arch pointer’ as far back as it will go in the ‘heel cup’ of the foot you are measuring, and open the ‘width bar’ as far as possible. This will make it easier for you to place the customer's foot in the correct position for measuring.

    2. To begin measuring the customer's foot, have them remove their footwear and place their left or right heel firmly against the back of the correct ‘heel cup’ to get the most accurate measurement.

    3. If a customer is wearing socks, make sure the socks are pulled tight against their toes, but not tight enough that their toes curl. This will help you get an accurate measurement.

    4. Have the customer stand up straight as you measure their foot, with their weight spread evenly between both feet. This will help give you the most accurate measurement, since their feet will appear narrower than they are if the customer is not standing.

    5. To measure the heel-toe length, have the customer lightly press their toes against the ‘base plate’. Look down at the device from above and determine which length line is closest to the customer’s longest toe.

    6. To measure the arch length, slide the ‘arch pointer’ along the inside of the customer’s foot until the inside curve of the point is at the ball joint of their foot (where the toes and the base of the foot meet and the foot begins to arch). The number the pointer is pointing to is your measurement.

    7. To measure the width of the customer’s foot, push the ‘width bar’ to the outside of their foot so it rests against their foot. This is important because a customer with wider feet will be uncomfortable in narrow shoes, even if they are the correct length.

    8. Compare the customer’s heel-toe and arch lengths. Use the larger of the two numbers to choose the appropriate shoe size for them. This will ensure the customer’s shoes fit comfortably, without being too large or too tight.

    9. Once you’ve measured one foot, measure the customer’s other foot, as they may be different sizes.

    10. If a customer has one foot that is larger than the other, choose a shoe size that fits the larger foot. This way, the larger foot isn’t squished or uncomfortable in the smaller shoes.

    11. Clean or sanitize the Brannock device when you are finished using it according to your store’s policy.
